StarsBOX

Sleep beneath the stars of the Ligurian Apennines

Rifugio Monte Aiona Pratomollo has 3 StarBox cabins — transparent glamping shelters designed by Officina82 with an openable roof for stargazing at 1,520 metres. Each cabin sleeps 2 guests. At this altitude in the Parco Naturale Regionale dell'Aveto, far from coastal light pollution, the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye from June to September.

Your Private Window to the Night Sky

Imagine falling asleep to a canopy of stars, with nothing between you and the Milky Way but a whisper of mountain air. Our three StarsBOX cabins sit on the slopes of Monte Aiona, far from any light pollution.

Each StarsBOX features an openable roof panel, so you choose your experience: open to the sky on clear nights, or sheltered and snug when the weather turns. Inside, a comfortable bed, reading lights, and the silence of the Apennine mountains.

Breakfast by Horse

For our youngest guests, waking up in a StarsBOX comes with a special surprise. Our Shetland ponies can deliver your breakfast right to your cabin door — a mountain morning your children won't forget.

The rifugio is home to five horses, including two gentle Shetland ponies. Whether it's a breakfast delivery, a meet-and-greet, or simply watching them graze on the Pratomollo meadows, our horses are part of what makes this place special.

A Sky Like Nowhere Else

At 1,520 metres in the Aveto Natural Park, far from the lights of the Ligurian coast, the night sky here is extraordinary. On clear nights you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye, and the Perseid meteor shower (peaking 11–13 August) can produce up to 100 shooting stars per hour.

The StarsBOX experience is about slowing down — no screens, no noise, just you and the mountain sky.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a StarsBOX?
A StarsBO is a transparent glamping cabin designed by Italian studio Officina82 and built by Saglietti Group. It features an openable roof, allowing you to stargaze from bed. Rifugio Monte Aiona has 3 StarBox units, each sleeping 2 guests.
Can you see the Milky Way from the StarsBOX?
Yes. At 1,520 metres in the Parco Naturale Regionale dell'Aveto, far from coastal light pollution, the Milky Way is clearly visible with the naked eye from June through September. The best conditions are on moonless nights.
What is the horse-delivered breakfast?
During the season, children staying in a StarBox can have breakfast brought to their cabin by one of the rifugio's Shetland ponies, led by a handler. It's an add-on to your StarBox stay — just let us know when you book.
Is the StarsBOX heated?
Yes. The cabins are heated for comfort. The roof panel can be closed in poor weather or cold nights.
When is the best time to book a StarsBOX?
For stargazing, June to September offers the darkest and clearest skies. The Perseid meteor shower peaks around 11–13 August and is the most popular booking period. We recommend booking well in advance, especially for summer weekends.
How many StarsBOX cabins are there?
Three. With only 3 units available, we recommend booking early — particularly for the August Perseid meteor shower period.
